What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior compression for images on the web. WebP images are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG and PNG files at equivalent visual quality, making pages load faster and consuming less bandwidth.

How to Use

  1. Drag and drop images onto the dropzone, or click to select files from your device — multiple files are supported.
  2. Adjust the Quality slider (1–100, default 85) to balance file size against visual fidelity.
  3. Click Convert All to convert every pending image to WebP using your browser.
  4. Each card shows the original size, converted size, and percentage reduction.
  5. Click WebP on any card to download that file, or use Download All as ZIP to save everything at once.

Tips

  • A quality of 80–90 is a good default — visually almost identical to the original but noticeably smaller.
  • Very low quality values (below 50) produce visible artifacts. Use 60–70 for aggressive compression where quality is less critical.
  • Changing the quality slider resets converted files so you can re-run at the new setting without re-adding files.
  • The conversion uses your browser's Canvas API — images never leave your device.

FAQ

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never sent to any server or third party.

What browsers support WebP?

WebP is supported in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari (macOS 11+, iOS 14+), and Edge. Internet Explorer does not support WebP.

Why is my converted WebP larger than the original?

This can happen with small or already-compressed JPEG images at high quality settings. Try lowering the quality slider to 70–80. Alternatively, some source images are already highly optimized and WebP gains little over them.

Can I convert animated GIFs to animated WebP?

No. The Canvas API only captures the first frame of an animated GIF. For animated WebP conversion, dedicated server-side tools like cwebp or ffmpeg are required.

Is there a file size or count limit?

There is no hard limit enforced — the tool is constrained only by your browser's available memory. Very large images (above 30 MP) may be slow to process or cause the browser tab to run out of memory.
